Work through the steps below in order. Each one rules out a cause before you change the next thing.
First, read your Stats properly
In Shop Manager → Stats, Etsy separates a few numbers that are easy to mix up:
- Visits are browsing sessions. Listing views are clicks on listings. One shopper who opens six listings counts as one visit and six views.
- Conversion rate is the percentage of visits that ended in an order. Etsy says it can be affected by photo quality, price, reviews, titles and descriptions, among other things.
(Source: Etsy Help: Shop Stats glossary.)
Look at at least the last 30 days. If you only have a few dozen views, you may not have enough data to call it a conversion problem yet. Keep improving, but don't overreact to small numbers.
A diagnosis that experienced digital sellers in r/EtsyDigitalSeller often use (thread):
| Symptom | Likely cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Few impressions or visits | Keywords, category, tags, attributes, or low demand | Steps 1 and 4 |
| Shown in search but few clicks | First image doesn't stand out or isn't clear | Step 2 |
| Clicks but no sales | Wrong searches, unclear deliverable, price, trust | Steps 1, 3, 5, 6 |
This guide focuses on the last row.
Step 1: Check which searches are bringing people in
Under How shoppers found you, choose Etsy search to see the search terms people used to find your listings (Etsy Help: Stats).
This is the most overlooked step. If your drawing worksheet is being found by people searching for wall art, you'll get views from people who were never going to buy a worksheet. In that case the fix is to make the title, tags and first image unmistakably about what the item really is, even if that means fewer but better-matched views.
Step 2: Fix the first image
For a digital product, the first image has to answer "what is this and what do I get?" in about a second. A few platform rules to follow:
- Use a landscape or square first photo so the focal point survives the cropped thumbnails.
- Etsy recommends images at least 2000 px on each side, and a first photo at least 635 px on each side "to avoid showing up lower in searches".
- Leave a margin, then use the thumbnail adjustment tool to check the square, portrait and landscape crops.
- Transparent PNGs show as black on Etsy, so export flat JPGs or PNGs.
(Source: Etsy Help: images.)
What usually helps digital listings:
- Show real inside pages, several at once, watermarked if you're worried about copying.
- Put one concrete fact on the image: "12 practice sheets", "Canva template", "fits A4 & US Letter".
- Make it clear it's a digital download. Etsy's handbook says emphasising this in titles and tags helps cut down on confused buyers (Etsy Seller Handbook).
Search your own main keyword and look at your thumbnail among the results. Can you tell what's being sold?
Step 3: Make the title say what it is
Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters. Etsy suggests keeping to under 15 words, stating clearly what the item is, and avoiding repetition and subjective words like "perfect" (Etsy Help: create a listing). Etsy also says where a phrase appears in your title doesn't affect ranking, but you should lead with what the item is, because that's what shoppers see first, especially on mobile (Etsy Seller Handbook: Keywords 101).
For digital products, specific beats general. "Weekly Digital Planner for GoodNotes, iPad, Undated" tells the buyer more than "Digital Planner".
Step 4: Use all 13 tags, and fill in attributes
Etsy allows up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Etsy advises using all 13, using multi-word phrases rather than single words, and targeting specific "long tail" searches over broad ones (Keywords 101; Etsy Help: tags).
Etsy search looks at the title, tags, attributes, description, first photo, reviews and more as a whole, so pick the most specific category and fill in every relevant attribute (Keywords 101). Mark the listing as digital files so buyers know what to expect.
Step 5: Answer "what exactly do I get?"
Buyers of digital products can't inspect the item, so the description has to do it for them:
- File details: type (PDF, PNG, Canva link), number of files and pages, sizes. Etsy lets you attach up to 5 files to a digital listing (Etsy Help).
- Compatibility: which apps or devices it works with, and whether a paid account is needed.
- How to use it: download, open, print or edit. Two or three lines.
- What's not included: for example "no physical item will be shipped".
- AI disclosure, if it applies: Etsy requires sellers to say in the listing description if an item was created with AI (Etsy Seller Handbook: AI creations).
- Matching numbers: page counts, sizes and "includes X" should be the same in the title, images and description.
Step 6: Check your price against real comps
Search your main keyword and open three or four listings that look like they're selling. Compare price, number of reviews, what's included and how the bundle is framed. If you're priced like the established listings but have no reviews, buyers have little reason to choose you. A sale or "was" price only helps if it's genuine and consistent.
There's no single right price. Write down your reasoning and change one thing at a time so you can tell what worked.
A worked example (anonymised)
Our Etsy sample makeover looked at a couples budget spreadsheet (seller and listing details removed). It already showed up on page one of Etsy search for "couples budget spreadsheet", so people were seeing it. They just weren't choosing it. The diagnosis found:
- Three names for one product. The title, the cover and the phrase shoppers searched for each called it something different. Fix: one name everywhere, using the buyers' own search phrase.
- It led with the limits. The description said what the sheet couldn't do early on, and repeated a "Google Sheets only" warning four times. A popular one-tab competitor sold the same simplicity as a benefit. Fix: open with the question the sheet answers, then put the limits in one plain "Good to know" line.
- A key detail was hidden. Shared costs split 50/50, but that only showed in the gallery, while the Bestseller-badged listings in the same search led with bill-splitting features. Fix: state the 50/50 split up front so couples with unequal incomes aren't surprised.
- Thin, old proof. A couple of reviews, all from over two years earlier, next to competitors with roughly 50 to 200. Fix: a friendly review request in the instructions tab and delivery PDF (never offering anything in exchange).
- Small errors on a money product. A doubled word, a missing article and mixed bullet styles. Fix: a careful proofread.
The price suggestion in that sample was clearly marked as an estimate, not a predicted result. We also have a Gumroad sample with a full before/after table on the Gumroad listing makeover page.
When to get a second pair of eyes
After this many rewrites, it's hard to see your own listing as a first-time buyer does. Free options: r/Etsy allows feedback requests on "Feedback Fridays" (rules), and Etsy's community Shop Optimization group runs live listing critiques.
If you'd rather have one listing reviewed against its competitors with finished copy, SellPolish does digital download listing optimization for Etsy and Gumroad: $19, delivered as a PDF within 24 hours (weekends included), with no shop access needed and a 14-day full refund.
If you also sell on Gumroad, where traffic works very differently, read Gumroad product not selling: traffic or page problem?.
FAQ
Why do my Etsy digital downloads get views but no sales?
The usual causes are the wrong searches bringing people in, a first image that doesn't show the deliverable, an unclear title, missing file or compatibility details, or a price that doesn't hold up against similar listings. Start with the search terms in your Etsy Stats.
What's the difference between visits and views on Etsy?
A visit is one browsing session. Views count each listing clicked, so one visit can include several views (source).
How many tags should an Etsy digital listing use?
All 13. Each can be up to 20 characters, and Etsy recommends multi-word phrases (source).
What should the first image of a digital download show?
The actual product: several inside pages or a mock-up, one concrete fact such as the page count or format, and a clear sign that it's a digital download. Use a landscape or square image of at least 635 px on each side (source).
How do I see what people searched to find my listing?
In Shop Manager → Stats, under "How shoppers found you", select Etsy search (source).
Ready for a fresh pair of eyes?
One listing, one PDF, within 24 hours (weekends included). $19, no shop login, 14-day full refund. The first 20 orders also get a second-opinion pass on one more listing title.
