Gumroad product not selling? First work out whether it's traffic or the page

If you've put a product on Gumroad and nothing is happening, you've probably been told two opposite things: "your page is the problem" and "it's just traffic." Both can be true, but usually one matters much more for you right now. Fixing the wrong one wastes weeks.

This guide shows how to tell them apart using numbers Gumroad already gives you, and what to do in each case.

The 2-minute check in Gumroad Analytics

Open Analytics in your Gumroad dashboard, select the product, and set the date range to the last 30 days or longer. Gumroad shows:

  • Views: how many times the product page was viewed.
  • Sales and conversion rate: the share of viewers who bought. Gumroad's own example is that 10 views and 5 purchases is a 50% conversion rate.
  • Referrers: where each view came from (for example X, Google, or "Recommended by Gumroad" for Discover), with views, sales and conversion for each source.

(Source: Gumroad Help: the sales analytics dashboard.)

Then sort yourself into one of three groups:

What you see What it most likely means Fix first
Very few views (a handful a week, or none) Traffic problem. Too few people are reaching the page to judge it at all Distribution: get the link in front of the right people
A steady number of views, no or very few sales Page problem. People arrive and leave Title, cover, description, proof, price
Views from one source convert, another doesn't Audience mismatch. One channel sends the wrong people Put more effort into the source that converts, or change how you pitch on the other

There's no universal "good" conversion rate we can honestly quote. It depends on price, niche and where visitors come from. What matters is whether you have enough views to judge. With a small number of views, a page with zero sales may simply not have been tested yet.

If you have almost no views: it's a traffic problem

This is the most common situation, and a page rewrite won't fix it. Gumroad works mostly as a storefront and checkout. Shoppers don't browse it the way they browse a large marketplace.

Gumroad Discover won't help at the start. Gumroad only recommends your products in Discover once your account meets its requirements: payout settings filled in, at least $100 in genuine sales (self-purchases don't count), and a risk review that Gumroad says takes about 3 weeks on average after you pass that threshold. Each product also needs at least one non-refunded sale, a selected category, and ratings turned on (Gumroad Help: Discover). Your first sales have to come from traffic you bring yourself.

What helps at the zero-views stage:

  1. Pick one audience and one place they gather. A subreddit, a Discord server, an X niche or a Pinterest topic. Being useful there consistently beats posting the link everywhere once.
  2. Share the problem the product solves before you share the link. A short demo, a before/after, or a free tip taken from the product.
  3. Offer a low-risk way in. Gumroad lets you set a free or pay-what-you-want price by adding "+" to the minimum, for example "$0+" or "$5+" (Gumroad Help: adding a product). A free sample product can collect buyers you can email later.
  4. Make sure every share points to the product page, not your profile. Then check Referrers to see which channel actually sends views.

Don't buy fake sales or "seed" purchases from multiple accounts. Gumroad excludes self-purchases from Discover eligibility, and it risks your account.

If you have views but no sales: it's a page problem

Now the page is worth fixing. Go through these in order, because the earlier items affect more visitors:

1. Does the title say what it is? Taglines like "The Ultimate System" don't tell a skimming buyer anything. Lead with the product type and the words your buyer would search for: "Notion client tracker for freelance photographers" beats "Get Organized Forever."

2. Does the first cover show the product? Use a real inside page, a phone or page mock-up, or one clear number. Gumroad recommends covers of at least 1280 × 720 px, and you can add up to 8 (Gumroad Help: cover images). Use the extra covers for inside pages and a "what you get" card. Gumroad also recommends making your first cover an image rather than a video, because the carousel dots that show there are more covers are hidden while a video plays.

3. Do the first lines explain the problem, the outcome and the time it takes? Lead with the buyer's situation, then what changes, then how quickly. Put feature lists further down.

4. Is "what you get" concrete? File type, page or item count, which apps it works with, and how it's delivered. Gumroad's summary and additional-details fields appear below the buy button, so use them (Gumroad Help: adding a product).

5. Do all your numbers agree? Item counts, "was" prices and bonus "values" must match everywhere on the page and stand up if someone clicks through to check.

6. Is there any proof? Ratings, a screenshot, a free sample. Gumroad automatically sends a review reminder 5 days after purchase, and you can email past buyers of a specific product to ask for a rating (Gumroad Help: ratings and reviews). Never write fake testimonials.

7. Does the price make sense next to similar products? Look at three or four similar listings and compare price, number of ratings and what's included. A premium price with no reviews is a hard sell next to an established alternative.

8. Is the refund line next to the price? One sentence about your refund policy removes a last-second worry.

A real example of page problems (anonymised)

In a sample makeover we did of a Gumroad AI prompt bundle (seller and product details removed), the product had made sales but had no ratings. The page had:

  • three different prompt counts and two category counts in its title, summary and description;
  • a struck-through "was" price and a different "total value" figure in the copy;
  • one busy cover image, with no inside pages and no format details;
  • an all-caps title of about 140 characters, with the terms buyers search for buried.

The recommended fixes were one number used everywhere, one real "if bought separately" figure, 3–4 inside-page images plus filled-in spec fields, a shorter title that leads with the searched terms, and a review request to past buyers. The fixes were marked as recommendations, not guaranteed results. See the before/after table on the Gumroad listing makeover page.

What a makeover can and can't fix

Can fix: an unclear title, a cover that doesn't show the product, copy that lists features instead of results, contradictions, missing specs, an awkward price, and no FAQ.

Can't fix: zero traffic. If your Analytics shows almost no views, spend the next few weeks on distribution, not on rewriting. Come back to the page once people are reaching it.

If you're in the views-but-no-sales group, SellPolish offers a $19 Gumroad listing makeover: a PDF within 24 hours (weekends included) with a diagnosis, rewritten copy, cover ideas, tags and pricing vs comps. There's no shop access needed, and it comes with a 14-day full refund.

Selling on Etsy too? The diagnosis works differently there. See Etsy digital downloads: views but no sales.

FAQ

Why is my Gumroad product not selling?

Usually one of two things: too few people reach the page (traffic), or visitors arrive and don't buy (the page). Check Views and Conversion in Gumroad Analytics to see which it is.

Does Gumroad bring you customers?

Only partly. Gumroad Discover can recommend products, but only after your account has at least $100 in genuine sales, has passed a risk review, and the product has a category, ratings enabled and at least one sale (source). Until then, most traffic comes from you.

Will rewriting my Gumroad page get me sales?

Only if people are already viewing it. A better page converts more of your existing visitors. It doesn't create visitors.

How do I see where my Gumroad traffic comes from?

In Analytics, the Referrers table shows views, sales and conversion for each source, such as X, Google or "Recommended by Gumroad" (source).

How do I get my first Gumroad reviews?

Gumroad sends buyers a review reminder 5 days after purchase. You can also email past buyers of a specific product and ask them to rate it (source).

Ready for a fresh pair of eyes?

One listing, one PDF, within 24 hours (weekends included). $19, no shop login, 14-day full refund. The first 20 orders also get a second-opinion pass on one more listing title.
