How to write a Gumroad product description (with a copy-paste template)

Your description has one job: help a stranger decide quickly that the product is for them, and trust that it's real. That isn't the same as listing everything inside. This guide gives you a structure, a template you can paste into Gumroad's editor, and a before/after based on one of our real makeovers, anonymised.

What buyers see before your description

Get these right first, because they come before the description on the page:

  • The title. Say what it is and who it's for in plain words. "Notion Client Tracker for Freelance Photographers" tells a buyer more than "The Ultimate System".
  • The covers. Gumroad recommends cover images of at least 1280 × 720 px, allows up to 8, and recommends an image rather than a video as the first cover (Gumroad Help: covers). Use the extra covers for real inside pages and a "what you get" card.
  • The summary and additional details. Gumroad lets you add a summary and additional details, which appear below the buy button (Gumroad Help: adding a product). Put your format, page count and "instant download" facts there.

The structure, section by section

Each section answers a question the buyer has, roughly in the order they have it.

  1. Hook (2–3 sentences): "Is this about my problem?" Name the buyer's situation, what changes, and how quickly they see it. Be specific: "Your proposals take an evening each" beats "Save time".
  2. Show, don't claim: "Does it actually work?" A short demo, a screenshot or a before/after of the output. One concrete example does more than any adjective.
  3. What's inside: "What exactly am I buying?" Five to eight bullets, one benefit and one deliverable each. Lead with what they'd pay for, not the bonus.
  4. How it works: "Will I manage to use it?" Three steps, from download to first use.
  5. What you get (specs): "Will it work for me?" File type, number of files or pages, which apps it works with, and how it's delivered.
  6. Who it's for (and not for): "Is this for someone like me?" Two or three bullets each. The "not for" list builds trust.
  7. Proof: "Has anyone else bought it?" Real ratings or reviews only. Gumroad lets you embed reviews in the description with Insert → Reviews (Gumroad Help: ratings and reviews). No reviews yet? Show more of the inside instead.
  8. Risk reversal: "What if it's not for me?" One plain line about your refund policy, near the price. Only promise what you'll honour.
  9. FAQ: "What else is stopping me?" Requirements, setup, compatibility, refunds.
  10. Call to action. One clear line pointing at the buy button.

Before and after: based on a real makeover (anonymised)

This comes from our Gumroad AI prompt bundle sample makeover. The seller, shop and product names are withheld, and the names and figures below are fictional stand-ins that keep the original's problems.

Title

  • Before: "⚡ THE COPPERKITE PACK : 3,200+ Premium AI Prompts In 9 Categories — The Ultimate Toolkit That Turns AI Into Your Own Expert Team"
  • After: "Copperkite Prompt Pack: 3,150+ ChatGPT & Claude Prompts for Business, Content & Career"

Summary line

  • Before: "3,000+ Next-Level Prompts For All The Best Niches" (with a third count, 3,100+, further down the page)
  • After: "16 prompt packs, 3,150+ copy-paste prompts for ChatGPT & Claude across 9 categories: online business, content, coding, career, finance and more. One-time payment, lifetime updates, 30-day refund."

Opening lines (after)

Same AI as everyone else. Very different results. ChatGPT and Claude only answer the question you type. Ask a vague question and you get a vague answer.

Section Before After
Numbers Three different prompt counts, and 7 or 9 categories One count (3,150+ · 16 packs · 9 categories), used everywhere
Value claim Struck-through price, a different "total value", inflated bonus values One real, checkable "bought separately" price
Demo Present, but buried in hype Moved up: "See the difference in 10 seconds", the usual request vs the expert-written version
Specs None (no format or page count) "16 PDF files, 420 pages in total, instant download" plus compatibility
Who it's for Missing Three plain bullets
Try first Missing Free starter pack linked
Length Roughly 7,000+ characters, hype-heavy About 40% shorter

The rewrite reused the seller's own claims and demo idea, reworded. The report flagged that the seller should check their "works on free plans" claim before publishing. The sample doesn't report any sales results, and nor do we.

Where keywords go (and where they don't)

  • Title: the phrase buyers would type (for example "ChatGPT prompts", "Notion budget template"), once, near the start.
  • First two lines: the same phrase, naturally.
  • Tags: search terms belong in the tags on the product's Share tab, which help matching on Gumroad Discover (Gumroad Help: Discover).
  • Not in a pile. Repeating keywords makes the copy read like it was written for a machine, and buyers notice. Read it out loud: if you wouldn't say it to a customer, cut it.

Mistakes that cost trust

  • Numbers that disagree between the title, covers and description.
  • "Value" claims buyers can't check, or bonus values that don't match your own prices.
  • Features instead of outcomes. "45 pages" means little without what the pages help someone do.
  • No specs. Buyers shouldn't have to message you to find out the file type.
  • Made-up proof. Never invent testimonials or download counts.
  • Hidden refund terms. Put the refund line next to the price, and keep it accurate.

A pre-publish checklist

  • The title says what it is and who it's for
  • The first cover shows the actual product
  • The hook names the buyer's situation and the outcome
  • Every number matches across the title, covers, summary and description
  • The specs list the format, count, compatibility and delivery
  • "Who it's for" and "not for" are both there
  • Any proof is real
  • The refund line is accurate and near the price
  • You've read it out loud once

If you'd like a second pair of eyes, a Gumroad listing makeover gives you this rewrite for your own listing, plus a diagnosis, cover ideas, tags and pricing vs comps, as a ready-to-paste PDF for $19. Check first that your page is actually getting views: traffic problem or page problem?

FAQ

How long should a Gumroad product description be?

There's no fixed length. Make it long enough to answer the buyer's questions (what it is, what's inside, specs, who it's for, refunds) and cut everything else. In our sample makeover, the rewrite was about 40% shorter than the original.

What should the first lines of a Gumroad description say?

The buyer's situation, what changes after using the product, and how quickly they see it, in plain words they'd use themselves.

Where do keywords go on Gumroad?
